Airfield 4-H Conference Center

The Airfield 4-H Conference Center has multiple functions including use for conferences, banquets, reunions, retreats, summer camps, 4-H programs and other miscellaneous group experiences. There are also multiple lodging types and various outdoors resources such as a ropes course, camping facilities, sports fields, nature trails, swimming, canoes and boating, horseback riding facilities and more.

Anchor Point Marina

Located on the Appomattox River in Hopewell, Anchor Point Marina is the perfect location to set sail, fuel up or relax for your trip out on the water. Offering a snack bar, pump station, repair shop and multiple leasing options, the marina can fit any boat owner’s needs.

Appomattox Boat Harbor

Family owned and operated for more than 40 years, the Appomattox Boat Harbor is less than 2 miles from Southpark Mall. The harbor has over 50 floating slips and land storage, as well as the area’s widest and longest ramp open 24 hours a day.

Appomattox River Trail

The Appomattox River Trail stretches across multiple communities in the region. Starting at Roslyn Landing Park, the riverside trail has been built in phases over the past few years and has public facilities, small boat launch areas, interpretive signs and trails spurs and is bike accessible along the main riverfront path.

Big Woods Wildlife Management Area

The Big Woods Wildlife Management Area provides habitat for a wide range of species including deer, turkey and quail. Recreational opportunities include hunting, trapping, primitive camping, hiking among its pine forests and hardwoods.

Captain Jim’s Charter Service

With Captain Jim as your guide, come charter a boat and catch catfish as big as 100 lbs on the James River.

Chanco on the James

In need of a retreat? Chanco on the James has served the area as a retreat center for youth and adults as well as one of the longest running summer camp programs in the state. Situated on 125 acres of woods surrounded by natural wildlife along the James River, this quiet spot is the perfect nature getaway.

Colonial Heights Community Center

Effective January 1, 2020, the Community Center will be available in rental blocks; weekdays from 4:30pm to 9:00pm, and weekends from 8:00am to 2:00pm, and 3:00pm to 9:00pm. The rental fee is $100 per block. Also beginning with 2020 rentals, a Recreation and Parks staff member will be on-site during rentals to assist renters with questions/concerns, adherence to rules, and insure proper use of the building.

Community Center rentals are available to Colonial Heights residents and organizations only, and reservations must be made in person at the Recreation & Parks Department. Reservation requests begin the first business day of December for the following year. Call the Recreation & Parks Department at 520-9390 for more information or to check availability.

Colonial Heights Skate Park

Located behind the vocational school on Conduit Road, this unique Skate Park is open for anyone interested in developing their bicycle, rollerblade, or skateboard skills.

Country Club of Petersburg

The Country Club of Petersburg combines both the social and athletic aspects of golf, offering a beautiful landscape as well as exclusive clubhouse. Other membership amenities include tennis and swimming complexes and junior athletic program.

Dinwiddie Sports Complex

The Dinwiddie County Sports Complex is a multi-purpose facility currently housing many athletic fields including a football stadium, baseball field, soccer stadium and NCAA and high school level championship softball fields. The complex has hosted numerous collegiate programs including Virginia Commonwealth University soccer, Richard Bland College and multiple NCAA Division II baseball teams.

Dogwood Trace Golf Course

The Dogwood Trace Golf Course opened in 2008 and is proudly owned and operated by the City of Petersburg. The club focuses on offering a great golf game to players of all calibers, with more challenging pars and fairways.

Gray’s Creek Marina

Gray's Creek Marina is a small marina and public boat launch area, with attached restaurant. Owned by Surry County, visitors can paddle or boat along this deep water tributary of the James River. The popular Surry Seafood Company restaurant is located in the marina.

Historic Cameron Field

Cameron Field not only has a rich history, but offers residents acess to premier park amenities such as a locker room, concession stand, bleachers and stadium atmosphere. The Park also includes football and soccer fields and walking track.

Hog Island Wildlife Management Area

Hog Island Wildlife Management Area is a 3,908-acre system of islands and dikes. It has a mixture of open areas, forests and marshes. This protected area on the James River is a great area for hiking and some controlled hunting and fishing.

Hopewell City Marina

This city-owned marina with well-maintained facilities is adjacent to Hopewell and close to downtown. Completely renovated in 2014, the Hopewell Marina offers great access to James and Appomattox Rivers.

Looking for variety right outside your door? The Hopewell Community Center has it for you, whether you want to take a swim, hit the gym or play some racquetball.

Hopewell Riverwalk

The Hopewell Riverwalk is a project that has been years in the making. The Friends of the Lower Appomattox River was the first group to recognize the beauty and benefits of public river access at the Copeland site (now known as City Park). Volunteer-led cleanup efforts eventually provided the public with river access and the group raised funds for the addition of the park's first amenities like a pavilion and fishing pier.

Hopewell Skateboard Park

One of the city's newer additions, the Skateboard Park features fun ramps, jumps and skating for practicing skills and having a great time!

Idle Moment Farm

Idle Moment Farm is one of many horse farms in the region that offers stables and training.

James River National Wildlife Refuge

Spot a bald eagle amidst the 4,200 acres of forest and wetlands, fish along the riverfront or hunt in the designated areas. Please note, access is only possible with advance notice or for refuge-sponsored events.

Located in Prince George County, the JEJ Moore Athletic Complex is 52 acres featuring baseball/softball and soccer fields, a concession area and more.

Jordan Point Yacht Haven

Jordan Point Yacht Haven is a full-service marina offering boat sales, service, storage and repairs. While you're shopping, you can also stop by the snack bar for a bite to eat or for a quick swim at the pool.

Lake Chesdin Campground

Located on Lake Chesdin, a man-made lake/reservoir straddling the Chesterfield-Dinwiddie County line has water recreation for all with public boat access for fishing, boating and other activities, along with additional private marinas, camping and picnicking.

Lakeview Park

Lakeview Park is 2.7 miles of recreational access for residents, including a boat ramp, fishing pier, pavilions and picnic shelters, playground and tennis courts.

Legends Park

Legends Park offers a myriad of amenities for a variety of recreational needs, from lake access and scenic trails to playgrounds and baseball fields. The park also has picnic shelters, a tennis court, a wildflower sanctuary, a bike trail and much more.

An annual event in Surry County, the Pow Wow is an enlightening family experience featuring Native American dances, food and activities sponsored by the Nottoway Indians. Typically hosted at the Surry Parks and Recreation Center.

Richlands Dairy Farm

Experience a working dairy farm or visit the 800-acre place for one of the annual events such as Farm Day, the Corn Maze and various Halloween-time activities.

Roslyn Landing Park

Rugged Maniac Obstacle Race

Mud runs are all the rage in the country recently, and this one comes right to the region every year, transforming the dirt hills and trails of Dinwiddie Motorsports Park into a muddy, obstacle-filled funfest. A 5k run/walk with obstacles and the biggest mud puddles you've ever splashed your way through, this is an event not to miss for the active-minded individual.

Shepherd Stadium

Shepherd Stadium is a local baseball stadium for youth invitational and adult recreation tournaments and events. The stadium has concession stands and seating for plenty of fans.

Whippernock Marina & Campground

Located on Lake Chesdin, Whippernock Marina & Campground is a man-made lake/reservoir straddling the Chesterfield-Dinwiddie County line. It has water recreation for all, with public boat access for fishing, boating, and other activities, along with additional private marinas, camping and picnicking, and a sandy beach.

White Bank Park

Overlooking Swift Creek, White Bank Park is equipped with pavilions and picnic shelters, grills, a playground, disc golf course, boat ramp and fishing pier, volleyball court, and more.

Woodlawn Park

Hopewell Recreation and Parks is excited to celebrate new improvements at Woodlawn Park, a 1.5 acre neighborhood playground that has served the community for decades. The site has been on the Recreation Department's capital project funding request for years and was listed as the top priority in fiscal year 2019. The improved park space features an all-new 6,000 square foot playground, a new picnic pavilion, state-of-the-art outdoor fitness equipment, updated landscaping, and a paved walking trail. The $236,000 improvement project was funded both by capital improvement funds and a combination of grants.
