VSU Fine Arts Program Named Best Among HBCUs

Contributed Reports, The Progress-Index

PETERSBURG – HBCU Digest recently named the Virginia State University (VSU) Department of Art & Design the Best Fine Arts Program at an HBCU for 2015-16.

The honor is the second major recognition for the department in the past six months. In May, Animation Career Review ranked VSU’s animation program 46th in the nation among public institutions.

VSU’s program was the nation’s highest ranked HBCU and one of only two Virginia universities, the other is Virginia Tech, to be ranked. The art and design program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. The department offers courses leading to a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Arts degree. Students in the program can decide from four primary career paths: studio arts, animation, graphic design or web design.

“This most recent honor further validates the excellence of Department of Art & Designs programs and faculty,” said department chair Thomas Larose, Ph.D. “Our students can compete at the highest levels for career opportunities or for spots in the top graduate schools across the country or internationally.” For more information about VSU’s Department of Art & Design, contact Dr. Larose at tlarose@vsu.edu, or visit www.vsu.edu/study/artdesign.
